Interview with: Jas Binag who plays 'Pali'

Time to get your wedding attire ready, because you have been invited to a wedding. featuring the dynamic duo DJ'ing 'Pali and Jay'. You'll be taken on an immersive journey set at a wedding, who is the bride and groom? Maybe you.

I had the fantastic opportunity to interview the lovely Jas Binag, who plays Pali in the touring show 'Pali and Jay's Ultimate Wedding Dj Road show. Let's get into what we talked about.

Q: So tell me a little bit about your show?

A: It's about a nephew (Jay) and an uncle (Pali). They are a DJing duo and the journey of how they met, how they support eachother and how they deal with the troubles they face in that current time frame of their lives. A bromance. You see flash backs and they show how they become the pair they are today. You see how and why Pali became a DJ. They are like a Laurel and Hardy pair. They are an odd pair. Pali is in his 40's and is very old style. Where as, Jay is young and he is wrapped in social media, loves making vlogs and sharing pictures. It's the old meeting the new.

Q: So Jay modernises their Djing buisness? Is there any idea of Pali passing the baton over to Jay?

A: Yes! He wants to, but I am not giving too much away! Pali see's Jay as an heir to his Dj throne. However, he is not ready to give that up yet, but if Jay plays his cards right he can inherit this solid buisness.

Q: I read that this show is immersive, how is it immersive?

A: You are the guest to the wedding. It's a cabaret set up and we get the audience to participate with many moments in the show, there's a lovely moment where we pick a bride and groom from the audience if they are willing to do it; then, we get them to dance like a bride and a groom would at their wedding. In Ipswich, we had a bride at our show on her hen do! It was amazing and we picked her to be the bride.

Q: Is it different every show?

A: The story line is always the same, but we don't know who the guests, bride and groom will be, who we pick to participate and we also have 2 spies who are spying on the DJ duo from a rival company. They are different every show. It's great and unique.

Q: The immersive aspect must really build a connection with the audience.

A: Yes and alot of people will be able to experience what it's like at a Punjabi wedding. We have many iconic Punjabi songs we get the audience to get involved and dance! The audience absolutely love it.

Q: What does the role of Pali mean to you?

A: I grew in the late 70's/early 80's so the Punjabi songs we play are alot of the songs I grew up to. It's a community the Southhall, Birmingham based community this dj is. I have alot of friends who are in the Punjabi sector, actors, singers, dancers or dj's and I have seen alot of Uncle Pali's, they are all different and I just kind of made a mash up of them all. The writer based the show on his uncle and the writer told me how they speak in Southhall. I grew up in Hertfordshire, but in Southhall there is alot of phrases like 'Yeah Innit' 'Bro I tell you mate' etc. Pali is a very nervous, OCD, sentimental and protective character. It's brought me out my comfort zone this show and the experience has been enlightening.

Q: What do you feel the message of the show is?

A: It's an entertaining show and its 60/70 minutes long. The underlying message is about solidarity and being there for eachother. How this duo faces problems that the audience will have experienced in their own way and how the new and the old fuse. It touches on very real issues we all face.

Q: What do we learn about the Punjabi culture?

A: VALUES! It's about bringing back cultural values. How it was back in the day, there is this line Pali says: 'Back in my day everything had real meaning' Jay can't relate, because all he knows is the present. It's set up like a real Punjabi wedding.

Q: Have you had any other fun experiences performing this show.

A: In Ipswich we had 4 shows and we rarely had an Asian audience, it was 97% white and they really loved it. It shows the element of unity and fusion. Everyone just gets involved.

Q: If you had to sell it to someone in a few words what would they be?

A: It's entertaining, short, an emotional roller coaster, it's got some amazing songs and head bopping bhugra beats. The cabaret setting makes the audience so close to you, they are engrossed and it's not a strict audience setting. It's relaxed and up close.
