The Other Palace - Interview with Jack Chambers

A brand-new musical has landed. It's showing for 5 weeks at 'The Other Palace' theatre and it's all about the legendary composer Mozart. You may have heard of him; you've certainly encountered his music at some point, and this show brings his story to the forefront. Make sure to catch this show before it closes on August 30th 2025. It's filled with an abundance of emotion, passion and an interesting score! The show is written by Charli Eglinton, and she also wrote the music and lyrics.
There is a divine West End star-studded cast: Aimie Atkinson from the original Six cast, Erin Caldwell, who's starred in Heathers, Jordan Luke Gage departed the Titanique ship recently to join this show and many more! This interview features one of the stars, Jack Chambers, who plays the leading role of Wolfgang Mozart. He previously played the lead role in the well-reviewed 'Stiletto' at the Charing Cross theatre, which I previously gave 5 stars! A rising flame in the London theatre world, with a strong voice.
Here's what Jack Chambers has shared about the brand-new musical:
Q: Tell us all about 'Saving Mozart' and what makes it stand out?
A: Saving Mozart is an incredibly personal story. It's about the truth behind the man you all know the name of. It's all about love, family, pride, being subversive, innovative, and ultimately believing in yourself.
Saving Mozart stands out because the score is quite literally half Mozart and half
Charli Eglinton, the writer/musician/lyricist. It's a unique blend of classical and rock-pop music, and the classical nerds in the audience will be trying to spot the various Mozart melodies littered throughout the piece.
Q: What's your role and what does it mean to you?
A: I play the titular role of Mozart, aka ‘Wolfi’. It means a lot to me to play such an iconic and
innovative role such as this. I love being able to show the man behind the music. I can relate to him personally as he was so relentless in his ambition to break through and achieve his dreams. Ultimately, though, like me, he wanted to make his family proud.
Q: What is your favourite moment?
A: My favourite moment in the whole show is the performance of ‘The Magic Flute’, which
happens in the middle of a beautiful monologue and an epic song. It is such a beautiful, magical and poignant moment in the show, and I love being able to share it with audiences night after night.
Q: How much have you learnt about the iconic composer since playing the role? How have you made it your own?
A: I was already familiar with Mozart's music, but I wasn't fully aware of the man himself.
Researching his life and his relationships extensively has allowed me to truly explore the
multiple layers and intricacies of his story and bring them to life on stage. I have loved putting
my own stamp on the role of Mozart, playing him to every wonderful and dark extreme.
The last thing he would have wanted to be was muted. So, I wanted to embody him with a raw human vulnerability that everyone can relate to. I wished to avoid showing how he is commonly shown in other types of media. A mad musician with a brattish nature. Instead, I'm showing how incredibly passionate and eccentric Mozart was. He wasn't mad. He wasn't insane. He was simply misunderstood.
Q: How do the other characters in the piece shape Mozart?
A: Mozart was shaped by many people in his life. His father, Leopold, taught him music, creating the child prodigy we all know and love. His Mum, Anna Maria, was his protector and nurturer, ultimately making him a compassionate and empathetic person. His older sister, Nannerl, was the original prodigy and his inspiration, both as a performer and as a person. His wife, Constanze, was his manager and motivation, allowing him to show his true self. His
nemesis/tutor, Salieri, was the thorn in his side, who in the end made him strive for more and
more. So yes, he was shaped by the other people in his life and they are why we remember
him!
Q: Describe the show in one sentence?
A: Saving Mozart is a bold and unapologetic, pop/rock/classic-infused musical that reimagines the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart through the lens of the extraordinary people in his life; namely, his sister Nannerl and wife Constanze, who inspired, challenged, and ultimately preserved his legacy.
